When I first heard about the GEME Composter, I was curious but also sceptical. Composting has always appealed to me, but the idea of having food scraps and organic waste sitting around didn’t exactly sound pleasant. My main concerns were smell, mess, and whether it would actually produce usable compost quickly enough to make a difference in my garden. Still, after hearing so many positive things about GEME, I decided to give it a try. I received mine last Thursday, and after a full week of using it, I can confidently say I am beyond impressed.
First Impressions
Right out of the box, the GEME Composter feels solid, well-built, and thoughtfully designed. It’s compact enough to fit neatly outside, as we have an outdoor plug socket, without taking up too much space, but still has enough capacity to handle everyday waste from my household. What struck me first was how modern and sleek it looks compared to traditional compost bins. It doesn’t scream “smelly garden bin”—instead, it looks like a well-designed appliance that blends right in.
The setup is straightforward. I added the starter Kobold microbes as instructed, poured in around 800ml of water, left it overnight and that was it—it was ready to add food. I left it outside, as we have a plug socket outside, which is perfect because I can easily add scraps without worrying about smells indoors, and I’m absolutely sick of opening up the rubbish bin and have fruit flies around my head.
What I’ve Added So Far
This past week, I’ve really put the GEME Composter to the test. Here’s a quick rundown from what I can remember of what I’ve added:
- Fish
- Chicken drumstick bones
- Leftover rice pudding
- Bread
- Chips
- Cold coffee grounds
- Tea bags
- Eggshells
- Soft fruit
- Lemons and limes
- Banana skins
- Grass clippings
- Old flower heads (not the stems)
- Autumn leaves
- Shredded paper
- Old scraps of food from my existing compost bin

Here is the official list.
Now, if I had tossed this combination of fat, dairy, and garden waste into a regular compost pile, it would have been a disaster—slow breakdown, horrible odours, pests, and probably some very unhappy neighbours. But with GEME, I am amazed. Every time I open the lid, there is absolutely no bad smell. None. That’s one of the things that impresses me the most—this composter genuinely keeps odours under control, even with tricky materials like meat and dairy.
Odour Control That Actually Works
Let’s be honest: smell is the biggest reason people hesitate to compost. I certainly don’t want rotting food smells lingering around. But GEME’s built-in odour-control system really does the job. Even touching it doesn’t leave a smell on the fingers. Instead, it just smells like rich microbial nutrient rich earth. This gives me confidence that GEME is working exactly as promised.
Speed and Results
The next big surprise is the speed. After just one week, I already have a good amount of compost ready. It isn’t raw scraps anymore—it has transformed into a rich, dark compost that I plan to use when my roses arrive. I’ll also add a handful each to my strawberries and fruit trees. Considering how long traditional composting takes (sometimes months or even a year), this electric composter is a game-changer. It feels like magic watching my kitchen and garden waste turn into something beneficial for my plants so quickly.
Ease of Use
One of the things I love about GEME is how simple it is to use. There’s no turning or mixing piles, no guessing whether I’ve got the right balance of green and brown materials, and no worrying about adding the wrong scraps. I can toss in everything from meat bones to shredded paper without hesitation, and the composter takes care of the rest. For someone like me who wants the benefits of composting without the hassle, GEME is perfect.
Why GEME Works So Well
GEME’s secret lies in its combination of intelligent design and microbial technology. The starter microbes kickstart the decomposition process, breaking down even tough materials like bones and fat. The controlled environment ensures the right balance of heat, air, and moisture, which speeds up composting without the usual mess. Plus, the sealed design locks in smells while allowing enough airflow for proper breakdown.
The Environmental Bonus
I’m not a person who believes in man made climate change, so I didn’t buy this to play my part in saving the planet. However, we have no food waste recycling here, so most of my stuff has been going in my turning compost bin outside, or in the rubbish bin, and the smell of old meat waste is terrible. When I saw that this GEME electric composter could even include meat, fish and dog poo (I don’t own a dog), I had to buy it. Aside from making gardening easier, GEME makes me feel good about reducing my household waste. Instead of throwing food scraps into the bin and sending them to landfill, I’m turning them into something useful and usable. I don’t like the thought of sending food to landfill waste.
Looking Forward
What excites me the most is thinking about how I’ll use this compost in my garden. My roses are being delivered soon, and I can’t wait to feed them with the rich compost I’ve already created. It’s satisfying to know that the meals I’ve cooked this week will literally help my flowers bloom in the months ahead. That full-circle feeling is exactly why I wanted to start composting in the first place.
Final Thoughts
After just a week of using the GEME Composter, I can confidently say it’s one of the best investments I’ve ever made for my family, home, and garden. It’s fast, efficient, odour-free, and easy to use. The fact that I can throw in small bones, soup, dairy, paper, and garden waste without any issues still amazes me. And the quick turnaround into actual compost means I don’t have to wait months to see results.
If you’ve been on the fence about composting, or if you’ve struggled with smelly, slow, traditional compost piles in the past, GEME is the solution. It makes composting accessible for anyone, even those who live in smaller spaces or don’t want the hassle of maintaining a big outdoor pile. Please don’t let the price put you off. I’ve bought mine through instalments and in twelve months it’s paid off.
I bought the GEME Composter because I wanted to try something new, but now I can’t imagine going back. It’s clean, it’s efficient, and it’s helping me turn waste into something beautiful for my garden. When my roses bloom, I’ll know they’re thriving thanks to GEME.
In short, if you want an effortless, odour-free way to turn everyday scraps into rich, usable compost, I highly recommend the GEME Composter. It’s truly impressive.
Another thing, GEME says that is going to save you money against traditional electric composters that require regular filters etc, but it does recommend that you add another batch of microbes every two weeks, but as long as you don’t use up all of the compost you have created, the microbes will continue to work to break down food waste.

I noticed that you added tea bags; but the guide says no the them; how did the decompose then?
It just took longer to compost. Tea bags are fine, and coffee grounds too.
